iPhone economics and lower barriers to entry – The power of the App Store is defined by more than direct revenue.

The App Store has exposed incumbents in the mobile industry to the same sort of asymmetric competition that has reshaped the media industry over the past decade. Developers are responding in droves to the economic incentives that lower barriers to entry create, as well as the fact that the App Store has generated $1 billion in royalty payments in just a few years.

Sanyo SCP 3810 Cell Phone Review–Substantial Sanyo

I really don’t remember the last time I actually reviewed a cell phone from Sanyo, folks–frankly I don’t remember the last time I actually SAW a cell phone from Sanyo.  But you’ve got to hand it to the crew out at Sprint:  they really bring in the most eclectic offerings.  And today, we’re talking about the Sanyo SCP 3810, a solid, substantial Sanyo that makes me glad Sprint stocks them. The Sanyo SCP 3810 is a candy bar style cell phone with Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, mobile web, mobile email, text and instant messenging systems, speakerphone, a three hundred contact phone book that offers a full suite of contact options, alarm clock, calendar, calculator, stopwatch, world clock, voice recorder, the Sprint-exclusive Family Locater service (that lets you track your family’s cell phones via each cell phone, a great plus for nervous parents just letting their kids out of their sight), a 1.3 megapixel camera, and a battery that yields six hours of talk time on a single charge. Simple is the order of the day with this one–simple and substantial.  There aren’t a whole lot of features here, but that just means that the fewer features still available are much more front-and-center, and thus, the learning curve drops through the floor.  And when I say “substantial”, I mean as in heft and depth.  It’s a fairly bulky phone but it doesn’t feel out of place–it almost provides a sense of comfort through a feel of resilience

Eat it Jobs – Adobe, Greystripe bring Flash to iPhone, iPad

Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) may not want Flash on the iPhone and iPad, but Adobe is working with Greystripe to bring Flash ads to these devices. The partnership will allow developers to use Flash-authored ads to create rich-media advertisements in apps on the iPhone, iPad, Android and throughout the mobile web. Greystripe’s technology will translate the ads to HTML5 and this is important because most of the major advertising companies use tools that rely on Adobe’s web technology.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) coming to a MyTouch 3G near you ’soon’

HTC has recently come out and said that if your device was made this year, there’s a good chance that it will see the Android 2.2 ( Froyo ) update in the future. Sadly, the MyTouch 3G was not made this year, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be getting some Froyo love! The screenshot above says that MyTouch 3G users will indeed see the Android 2.2 update “soon.” Similarly to the way the HTC Hero leapfrogged Android 1.6 and 2.0 to go straight to Android 2.2 OS, the MyTouch 3G will do the same.

Verizon backs US Senate bill to reward states for texting-and-driving bans

We love when highly-visible companies like Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) Wireless formally endorse legislation that promotes complete bans on texting while driving . With research showing that sending text messages while behind the wheel of a multi-ton car is as dangerous as driving drunk (even more so, in some cases), it’s become clear that texting and driving can kill .

Ford’s ‘Send To SYNC’ Beams Google Maps Directions to Ford SYNC Vehicles

We’ve been writing about Ford’s SYNC service for quite some time now, and who can blame us, their continual update to their service calls for some attention. Today is another one of those updates, but this by far has got to be one of the coolest updates yet. Ford announced today a new update to their SYNC service called “Send to SYNC” that will allow users to send destinations from Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ) Maps to their SYNC Traffic, Directions, & Information (TDI) App on their Ford vehicle.  The way it works is the user would look up directions in Google Maps, to which the option to send the directions to their Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle will be available via a “send” menu on the site

Camera-Based Gesture Control for Android Offered by eyeSight

Gesture recognition through a smartphone’s camera certainly isn’t something we’ve never seen before, but it’s a rare sight on Android. eyeSight, based out of Israel, has been working on Symbian for awhile now, and is making the jump to Android, allowing you to mute incoming calls, navigate GPS menus, documents, and web pages, control music, and play games by waving your hand over the camera.

Sprint offers tips on how to improve Sprint HTC EVO 4G battery life, including carrying an extra battery

There’s no doubt that the Sprint HTC EVO 4G has a huge problem with battery life – that’s one of the few “cons” we mentioned in our EVO 4G review . What with the most sought-after Android phone of 2010 boasting a 4.3-inch display, a 1Ghz processor, and an Android 2.1 OS that’s capable of running all your apps at the same time, it’s no surprise that the EVO struggles to stay powered for more than a full day-light cycle.

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace bans porn

If you were hoping to download some naughty apps for your upcoming Windows Phone 7 smartphone, you’re out of luck because Microsoft ( NSDQ: MSFT ) will be taking Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL )’s lead and not allow sexually-suggestive apps in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. This was just part of the new policies Microsoft laid out for its upcoming mobile platform, which is expected to hit by the end of the year
