Digital Contents Expo Tokyo: Cybernetic human robot HRP-4C demo (2 videos)

Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology has showcased its most spectacular robot at the Digital Contents Expo in Tokyo today, the “cybernetic human” HRP-4C. The humanoid can’t move her legs, but the way she moves her arms, head and facial muscles is unbelievably human-like. Or you could say unbelievably creepy

In case you’re into role-playing and like to pretend to be a lawyer in your spare time, the best kind of lawyer too, the kind who sleeps with their secretary that’s half their age and tells the wife that they ended up staying late at work battling a pro bono case defending an inner city kid accused of selling illegal substances, then you’ll want to read this 30 page PDF detailing Nokia’s complaint against Apple for violating 10 patents held by the Finnish handset maker. For the impatient people among us, here is a list of the 10 patents, with links to their corresponding page on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website: Data transmission in a radio telephone network Method and apparatus for speech transmission in a mobile communications system Speech synthesizer employing post-processing for enhancing the quality of the synthesized speech Data transfer in a mobile telephone network Measurement report transmission in a telecommunications system Access channel for reduced access delay in a telecommunications system Method of ciphering data transmission in a radio system Integrity check in a communication system Reporting cell measurement results in a cellular communication system System for ensuring encrypted communication after handover If Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) wins this case, they’re looking at getting between $200 million and $1 billion courtesy of Cupertino according to an estimate by Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston

Digital Contents Expo Tokyo: Sony’s flashy stereoscopic 3D display (video)

Sony is demoing a 3D display at the Digital Contents Expo that takes place in Tokyo right now, and today I went there and made a few pictures and shot a video of the device, too. Two of the 360 stereoscopic displays were displayed to the general public, and the tech is pretty impressive. The specs aren’t that great (96×128 resolution, 24-bit color palette), but this is just a first prototype.

A look at how the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory (VAIL) is changing the world

Volkswagen is taking great strides in making the roads safer and remove the dangerous fun from driving by developing fully autonomous vehicles. I had a chance to talk to Dr. Burkhard Huhnke, director of the Volkswagen Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL) about the future of the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory (VAIL) at Stanford University and how the technology developed there is being integrated into Volkswagen Group vehicles.

ACCESS and Emblaze Mobile’s co-operation finally shows some results: ELSE INTUITION, Linux-based mobile OS

It was long time ago when we reported that ACCESS (the owner of the original Palm ( NSDQ: PALM ) OS which it re-christened to Garnet OS) is working with Emblaze and Sharp to create “revolutionary mobile device.” It seems they finally managed to bring their project close to the end, and voila – a press release has been issued, announcing the new mobile OS called ELSE INTUITION. It’s all about user interface these days and these folks know that. Hence the mentioned release adds the good ol’ “revolutionary” adjective before the phrase

At least, I like them and I’m happy to say that they’ve bundled three available titles — the original , Jurassic and Haunted 3D Rollercoasters — into a single application simply called 3D Rollercoaster Rush Bundle Pack

ARM Launches Cortex-A5 Multicore Processor

ARM announces the launch of the ARM Cortex-A5 MPCore processor, available as an extremely area- and power-efficient uniprocessor or up to a 4x multicore processor. By delivering better performance than the ARM1176JZ-S processor within the raw power and silicon area footprint of the ARM926EJ-S processor, the Cortex-A5 uniprocessor offers nearly twice the power-efficiency relative to these earlier and extremely popular predecessors. This increases the quality of the user experience while reducing costs and end-user device size. The Cortex-A5 processor is fully application compatible with the Cortex-A8 and Cortex-A9 processors

Verizon’s new ad campaign: ‘Don’t Text and Drive’

“Don’t Text and Drive.” So reads the tagline of Verizon ( NYSE: VZ )’s latest advertising campaign aimed at preventing thoughtless drivers from putting their text messaging needs ahead of public safety. The new ad campaign will blitz television, radio, print, online, billboards and non-traditional media with words of wisdom from the first US wireless carrier to back legislation that required drivers to use hands-free mobile phone solutions when driving

The Signal 44: CTIA Wrapup and EarPollution Timbre Earbud Giveaway

Yeah, yeah, we know, we’re a little late. Sorry for the delay, y’all – between recovering from CTIA, and some technical difficulties, the podcast fell to the wayside for a few weeks, but we’re back on track now. San Diego had a few treats in store for us, like the Samsung Moment and the Behold II, but there was a lot happening with T-Mobile ( NYSE: DT ) both before and after CTIA: the details of Project Dark came to light, so Will and I hashed out what hardware financing means for American wireless (mostly good things)

Sure, a £3,500 Motorola phone. Sounds good to me.

Let’s be honest for a second here: unless we’re talking about the Motorola Droid , which should be on Verizon Wireless within a few weeks, we might as well not be talking about Motorola. It’d be like talking about Real Madrid and only mentioning Granero or Drenthe and not Cristiano Ronaldo or Kaká. (Good, making references that all of 11 people will understand.) But we’re going to that such a thing right now in talking about the Motorola Aura Diamond Edition.

Dutch court orders, again, TPB to delete torrents, block Dutch users

More news about The Pirate Bay to bore you all! (Seriously, it’s not like people are still talking about the old Suprnova or Torrentspy anymore, yet the TPB has stuck around.) Some time ago, a Dutch court ordered TPB to delete a number of torrents and block Dutch IP addresses from being able to visit the site. Using a sledgehammer on a thumbtack, yes. Then TPB protested, as it does all the time, saying that it had no idea about the court case to begin with, so it couldn’t make a proper defense, etc.

American Booksellers Association concerned that rapidly falling book prices will be bad for consumers. Yes, you read that right. Low prices = bad.

Books, books, books! The American Booksellers Association , a trade group that represents small bookstores (not Barnes and Noble and the other big guys), has asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether or not Amazon, Wal-Mart, and Target have “[devalued] the very concept of the book” with their ongoing price war. Well, they’re actually asking for an investigation into their selling practices. That is, because Amazon wants to outsell Wal-Mart, and Wal-Mart wants to outsell Amazon, they both sell the latest book (think Stephen King, Dan Brown, etc.) for some really low price, like $10

Psystar Rebel EFI isn’t magic, won’t install OS X on “any machine”

When the Psystar Rebel EFI software launched yesterday, the Internet collectively gasped at the wild claims but a few people in the Hackintosh community probably new better. Sites were claiming that the Rebel EFI software would allow OS X to be installed on any computer, but that simply isn’t true as I’ve found out over the last 12 hours. In fact, it doesn’t seem to offer any more hardware support than the open source Chameleon bootloader
