Motorola acquires iDEN business from RadioFrame Networks

Motorola ( NYSE: MOT ) is acquiring iDEN business from RadioFrame Networks, which is known as a provider of lower cost, power efficient iDEN technology. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but we do know RadioFrame Networks’ stuff will be integrated into Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility business. According to the official press release , RadioFrame’s iDEN products will “further enhance Motorola’s portfolio for multi-channel base stations optimized to support non-contiguous spectrum allocations in the special mobile radio (SMR) business that are especially common outside North America.” Moreover, Motorola says that with this acquisition, it can further enhance its push-to-talk technology roadmap plans for “strengthened operational capability, end-user functionality and cost-effective expansion.” I’m not sure I agree with Moto’s strategy to invest in iDEN technology with LTE rollouts already being planned around the world.

GSMA and IFC announce Green Power for Mobile project targeting off-grid operators in developing markets

GSMA and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) have announced the Green Power for Mobile (GPM) project, targeting operators in developing markets which may operate in some areas in the off-grid environment. So far, these operators relied on diesel aggregators for powering their cellular stations in remote areas that don’t have access to the power grid. In that sense, GSMA and IFC propose development and utilizing of clean energy resources and technologies, which would provide power to those stations.

Italian Surface-esque museum display combines Cover Flow with a huge touchscreen

This is certainly something all museums should attempt; not only does it allow for easy browsing of the museum’s pieces, as you see here, but if correctly done it could have maps, lectures, and all sorts of other stuff going on as well. It’s pretty easy to get lost in a labyrinth like the Louvre or V&A, but a system like this could both put people where they want to go and get them to buy more prints and mugs

Change your jailbroken iPhone SSH password with MobileTerminal

There’s an iPhone infection going around , so we thought it would be a good idea to post a quick “How-to” guide for changing your jailbroken iPhone’s SSH password. Unlike the Swine Flu, no amount of hand-washing or coughing into the bend in your arm is going to prevent your jailbroken iPhone from contracting a malicious infection. On the plus-side, changing the default password on your jailbroken iPhone should inoculate your handset from current iPhone worms

Celebrating 5 years of World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft turns 5-years-old today. Back on November 23, 2004, a year before the current generation of video game systems even began (with the launch of the Xbox 360), Blizzard released the massively multi-player online game at a time when massively multi-player online games were still largely the haunt of hardcore gamers, people with fast Internet connections who were willing to pay $15 per month for access to a game that they already bought. Who can forget the message board threads: Why do I have to pay for a game that I already paid for at the store?

No Windows Mobile 6.5 Update for XPERIA X1

Previously, there were rumours that Sony Ericsson ( NYSE: SNE )’s X1 would get an update to Windows Mobile 6.5 after a supposed leaked ROM hit xda-developers . Well, sources close to the matter are apparently dashing those hopes, saying that no official update is actually in the works. Considering the X1 already has a customized user interface, you aren’t really missing out on the facelift, and Marketplace is coming to 6.1 anyway , so the only substantial feature X1 owners won’t be enjoying is My Phone .

New iMacs Outperform Mac Pros in Benchmark Tests

Apple’s Mac Pros are pricey desktops designed for prosumer applications, so it’s not often you see them in a person’s home. But the speedy new iMac could render Mac Pros irrelevant even in offices if Apple doesn’t upgrade its high-end desktop soon. Benchmark testing by Macworld found that the top-of-the-line iMac, which features a 2.8-GHz Core i7 processor (one of the newest Intel chips using the Nehalem microarchitecture) and a 27-inch LCD display, is faster than the two Mac Pros available — a quad-core 2.66-GHz model and an eight-core 2.26-GHz version.

Microsoft defends decision to ban modded Xbox 360s (but says it didn’t ban 1 million of them)

You’ll recall that Microsoft recently banned a bunch of people from Xbox Live because they had modded their 360s. Modding is against the rules, don’t you know? Microsoft told VentureBeat not to believe the numbers being thrown around—the number most relayed is 1 million banned 360s—because it never releases numbers to anyone.

Brief: eXpansys have new Nokia E72 in stock!

You might have seen Stefan’s post recently , mentioning that the Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) E72 is finally in stores (and long while after it was announced, judging by the dates given) – well, eXpansys have just pinged me an email to let me know that they have the Nokia E72 in stock – at a pretty reasonable £349.99! Rather than repeat the specs for the device, I’ll note what eXpansys say is in the box: – Nokia E72 – Battery BP-4L – Stereo Headset WH-601 – Data cable CA-101 – 4GB Memory Card (MU-41) – Carry Case & Strap – Clean Cloth – Mains charger (AC-8) – User guide That’s a decent size memory card, and it’s nice to see the inclusion of a cleaning cloth – most devices these days are grease and dust magnets, so something to clean them off with is always appreciated! If you want to grab the E72 for yourself, you can reach eXpansys by clicking here. [Via: eXpansys ] Related News from IntoMobile: Expansys Friday Deals for 16/1/09: time-sensitive! Sony Ericsson use ‘interesting’ Marketing ploy to promote handsets

Sony Ericsson ( NYSE: SNE ) (and Sony in fact) have been right out there in recent years, with their Marketing campaigns – largely they have focused around the use of colour, relating to Sony (Bravia) TVs being great at displaying it, and Sony Ericsson cameraphones being great at capturing it. The recent campaigns for the Satio and Aino devices featured people on hoppers (check it here ) – and now they’ve gone one step further in the land of weird, by asking people to visit their site, and take a look at a webcam focused on room full of empty hoppers

Gameloft had previously been very excited about Android, jumping into the market with twenty titles last February , but they have since changed their tune, and are pulling away from Google ( NSDQ: GOOG )’s mobile platform. Gameloft’s director of finance, Alexandre de Rochefort, had this to say about their performance on Android at a recent investor’s meeting: “We have significantly cut our investment in Android platform, just like … many others … It is not as neatly done as on the iPhone.

Blinking LEDs transmit information to cell phones via light

I’m not really sure if this is good or bad news for end consumers, but a couple of Japanese companies have developed a technology that makes it possible to transmit information from blinking LEDs fixed on advertisements to cell phones – using only light. The companies involved in the development include some big names such as Toshiba or NEC. With this new system, Japanese cell phone users don’t have to scan the ubiquitous QR codes anymore to access more information on a certain product or to get coupons but can obtain the data without being physically close to the ads
