1 out of 3 AT&T iPhone customers will switch to Verizon

The iPhone has been an AT&T exclusive in the US for time immemorial (which, in the mobile world, translates into a little over three years), but that exclusivity will soon come to an end, with Verizon rumored to be launching an iPhone of their own in the near future. Big Red, with their self-proclaimed superior wireless network, might be able to put some real hurt on AT&T if/when the Verizon iPhone becomes a reality

The Mobile Roundup – The ‘Big Things’ edition

There was a bunch of news this week that could have long-reaching consequences and no story was bigger than the Google and Verizon putting forth a joint policy statement regarding net neutrality. This was also a big week for Android with the release of some high-profile devices but Google also faces a huge lawsuit over that little green robot. Finally, we took a look at some cool apps and our resident BlackBerry expert took a look at the much-vaunted BlackBerry Torch

Verizon to charge an extra $10 to $15 for 4G LTE data plans?

It looks like Verizon will be pulling a Sprint and will charge customers an extra $10 to $15 for the privilege of using the carrier’s 4G LTE data service -the charge will be added on top of the existing data plan for compatible devices. We can’t we say we’re surprised, but it’s going to be interesting how customer react to drastically highers fees to access the faster 4G LTE data network. Verizon is expected to start bringing the mobile broadband data speed of its nascent 4G network to laptops (via USB data cards), and then work their way to LTE-enabled smartphones, which should become available sometime in the first half of 2011, possibly May .

New BlackBerry Torch 9800 Ad Shows How Business Meets Pleasure

We’ve seen one AT&T ad for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 that was high on gloss, but they’ve just released another TV spot that’s a little more fun. Appropriately enough, they’re pitching the device as a “business meets pleasure” kind of smartphone, which would be a fair enough assessment if there was a catalog of decent games in App World (which there isn’t). Besides that, I’m more of a fan of Verizon’s Droid ads , but AT&T’s is still a fun little commercial worth a gander.

iOS 4 PDF security flaw fixed jailbreak-style for the iPhone and iPod Touch

Earlier this week, Apple released  iOS 4.0.2 which fixed a  security vulnerability that enabled the famed JailbreakMe.com website to work its magic on your iPhone or iPad. While fixing a major security hole is normally considered a good thing, Apple dropped the ball by not including the original iPhone or the first generation iPod Touch in this update

Android 2.1 Update Gets Leaked For Dell Steak in UK

Google’s Android open source operating system is a great one but due to its frequency of updates and the infrequent rate at which hardware manufacturers push these updates out, some users have been left in the dust. The Dell Streak is a prime example of this segmentation as although it is a brand new device, Dell is still putting the finishing touches on the updated versions which means it will ship with Android 1.6 in tow. Fortunately, some hackers over in the UK found this delay in updates to be inappropriate and have taken the liberty to themselves update the device to Android 2.1 also known as Eclair.

Kindle And iPad Displays Go Under The Microscope

This set of comparison pics showing the Kindle and iPad displays at high magnification is really more the result of curiosity than an attempt at making a point. It really is interesting to see the differences between the Kindle’s e-ink display, the traditional (but high-quality) LCD of the iPad, and a printed page.

Four short links: 13 August 2010 – Scientific Literacy, Load Balancing, Indoors Geolocation, and iPhone Security

The Myth of Scientific Literacy — I’d love it if there was a simple course we could send our elected officials on which would guarantee future science policy would be reliably high quality. Being educated in science (or even “about science”) isn’t going to do it.

What Did Apple Buy When It Bought LiquidMetal? If You Like Watches, You’ve Already Seen It

If you remember, Apple bought LiquidMetal’s patents last week , allowing the company to create “fluid” metal surfaces in its devices. While there has been plenty of talk about Terminator-like iPhones that flow under and around doors and windows to kill John Connor, but if you’ve seen an Omega watch recently, you’ve already seen liquid metal. Hodinkee has a video of the Omega Liquidmetal bezel and they note that Omega will not be forced to stop using the technology after Apple’s patent buy

Droid 2 Teardown Reveals Beefed-Up Processor, Few Other Changes

The Motorola Droid 2 looks a lot like the original Droid, and a teardown reveals that the similarities go more than skin-deep. In fact, the internal layout and most of the Droid 2’s components are nearly identical to those of the original Droid, gadget repair site iFixit found . The most significant upgrade is to the processor, which is probably a Texas Instruments OMAP 3630, iFixit says

UK’s ITV Not Pleased With Apple iTV Rumors, Says It Will Defend Its IP

As soon as the rumor broke that Apple would be renaming its struggling Apple TV to iTV, to better fit with the company’s i[Device] naming system, I thought to myself, “Isn’t ITV the name of a television network in England that always misses key goals in soccer games?” Yes, yes it is. In fact, the network isn’t too keen on Apple using the name iTV, and has promised to “vigorously defend” its IP. In an interview with Pocket-link, Mike Large, ITV’s acting group director of Communications, said that it has a “very strong brand, and a highly valued IP.” As such, any move on Apple’s part to re-name the Apple TV could expect to meet a legal challenge
