Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition: The cheapest device with GPS to ever hit the market [110 EUR]

Nokia ( NYSE: NOK )’s massive scale allows them to drive down their costs drastically. While many, practically all of you, will never buy the 2710 Navigation Edition, there are people in emerging economies who are going to enjoy the safety of having a map in their pocket at all times and knowing where on that map they’re currently standing. I’ll never forget when the Nokia N97 came out; GPS in a mobile phone was unheard of at the time, and this was only 2 years ago

Yahoo’s mobile division set for exponential growth

Yahoo expects its mobile division to grow “exponentially,” even as the overall market is only starting to emerge from recession. In that sense, the company is focused on boosting the number of mobile users as a way to attract more advertisers, Hilary Schneider, Yahoo North America’s executive VP said at the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York. She went on to add: “If you just look at the growth rates on mobile, they’re incredible, they’re extraordinary, but you have to just remember that they’re starting with a small base.

Apple’s LaLa acquisition points to streaming iTunes music

Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) has been raking in cash with its iTunes music store over the past several years, in the process forcing the music industry and consumers to get comfortable with paying $1 per downloaded song. These days, you’ll find iPod and iPhone users toting around dozens of gigabytes worth of downloaded music with them wherever they go. Soon though, Apple might just side-step the download process and stream your music library directly to your iPhone.

T minus 2 days until Samsung reveals Bada; EA and Twitter to be at the launch event

I don’t know about you, but I’m actually quite curious to see what Samsung has up their sleeves with their home grown Bada operating system . You may not know this, but Samsung is the second largest handset maker in the world. They’re not a little fish in the sea, and depending on which analyst you ask, the South Korean company whose name translates to “three stars” and who started out as nothing more than a trading post, may very well become the next Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) in terms of unit sales.

Skyhook Wireless survey: There’s still no money in Android apps

Unlike the iPhone apps, Android apps are not pure gold, as not that many people actually buys them. According to the recent Skyhook Wireless’ survey, Android developers are frustrated with multiple issues, including: 82% of those surveyed indicated that the design of the Android Market makes it difficult for apps to be noticed; 57% are not satisfied with the profits to date; 43% report that they would sell more apps if Android used a carrier billing or another simpler billing system (other than Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ) Checkout); Only 10% of Android developers are currently serving ads. Finally, as we see Android evolving with the day, developers don’t like the idea of having multiple versions of the OS available for the users – 46% were certain this would make development more difficult.

We love the mobile banking and payment provider Obopay, and perhaps more importantly, Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) loves them — hence they’ve launched the Nokia Money service in partnership with Obopay. In that sense, I’m glad to report that Obopay has been chosen by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer 2010 for its “innovation, transformational technology, leadership and substantial long-term impact on businesses and society.” Obopay is one of 26 companies from around the world to be honored with this prestigious award, which the company will “pick up” at World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in January

“This means something:” Why the magazine industry is suddenly crowing about tablets

Whenever companies do something inexplicable, the nerd in me always comes back to that scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind when Richard Dreyfus keeps building models of a mountain, culminating in a huge, muddy mess in his kitchen. Throughout it all he keeps saying “This means something.” Well, the latest molehill into a mountain is the move by Time Inc. and Conde Nast , among others, to build a tablet-based interface for their flagship titles

Huge Scandinavian study suggests no link between mobiles and brain cancer (so relax)

This particular issue is far from settled, since it is a fact that certain levels of radiation lead to transcription errors and such, but at the very least, studies like this one reinforce the idea that we’re not all of us going to drop dead in a couple years. The study, performed by the Danish Cancer Society and documented in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, studied brain cancer rates in Scandinavian countries over a period of 30 years.

Head of HTC Sweden: Hero successor to be shown in February 2010, will be in stores shortly thereafter

Patrik Andersson, formerly Channel Manager at LG, is now Head of HTC Sweden. Having recently took office his first order of business was to recruit 10 people under him to handle sales and marketing in the land of IKEA and meatballs. He says that standing in a room full of people arguing about megapixels and other useless specifications is not the type of environment where HTC thinks it should be, instead they’re focused solely on user experience and that the iPhone is a huge inspiration

“A Parallel Image”: a novel way of transmitting a video signal

What you’re looking at is an installation by Gebhard Sengmüller called “A Parallel Image.” Technically, it’s art, but it’s more of an interesting deconstruction of technology than anything else. Instead of transmitting a video signal digitally via HDMI or VGA, this contraption does it in analog: 2500 photoconductors in an array, individually wired to 2500 bulbs on the other side

Motorola ‘LaJolla’ could be the jewel of Motorola’s Android lineup, here’s why

Motorola’s LaJolla handset was revealed today in the Motorola ( NYSE: MOT ) CLIQ’s source code. The codename, in Spanish, means “the jewel,” but given the lowly specs of the Android phone, it’s unlikely to be anything close to a “gem” in Motorola’s Android portfolio. Still, the idea of the lower-cost LaJolla could very well end up being the jewel in Motorola’s Android strategy
