The War For the Web

It is becoming clear to me that we are heading into a bloody period of competition that could be extremely unfriendly to the interoperable web as we know it today. If you’ve followed my thinking about Web 2.0 from the beginning, you know that I believe we are engaged in a long term project to build an internet operating system. I’ve outlined a few of the ways that big players like Facebook, Apple, and News Corp are potentially breaking the “small pieces loosely joined” model of the Internet

Tamagotchi ID: New and customizable Tamagotchi to be rolled out soon

In September last year, Bandai has updated the Tamagotchi with a color version , causing dozens of teenage girls to leave comments on CrunchGear for the first time. And now the company is ready to roll out yet another model: The so-called Tamagotchi ID [JP] is named “ID” because it’s the first model you can customize to some extent. It’s also possible to install content off the mobile web on the device (but probably only in Japan)

findNano iPhone app lets you know whether some product has nanotechnology inside or not

I’m not quite sure what’s the idea behind the findNano iPhone app. It allows users to check whether some consumer product is nanotechnology-enabled or not. The application comes with a database of more than 1,000 nanotechnology-enabled products, from sporting goods to food products and electronics to toys

Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition: $230 for DVB-H and 3G

DVB-H, the technology that provides television broadcasts for mobile phones, has reached a new price point today with the launch of the Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) 5330 TV Edition. For 155 EUR ($230) you get a 114 gram slider that measures 101.2 mm x 48.5 mm x 14.25 mm, has a 3.2 megapixel camera, 3G, and a 1000 mAh battery good for about 6 hours or soul crushing, mind numbing, corporate sponsored programming. The screen measures only 2.4 inches across and has a resolution of 320 x 240, so try not to stare at it for too long, or else your eyes will go bad and you’ll wish you actually did something more meaningful with your life than attempt to sit through an entire “My Super Sweet 16″ marathon on MTV.

eBuddy Selects InMobi to Deliver International Mobile Advertising

InMobi and eBuddy have announced a partnership for Mobile Advertising. For those of your not so familiar, eBuddy is touted as being “the world’s leading independent web and mobile messaging service” and InMobi as being “the largest mobile ad network for international markets” It’s an interesting one, the Mobile Advertising market – not so very long ago at 3GSM (I still refuse to call it Mobile World Congress), the buzz was all around Mobile Advertising, and how it was going to overtake printed media and TV as the delivery medium of choice. There were also a ton of small companies in the space

Cool tech: PIR Security Sensor with build-in SMS Alerts

SeNd Technology have emailed me to let me know about their cool piece of tech – a connected S-PIR sensor, that uses text messaging to alert you – nice! The S-PIR is a self-contained motion detector with build in GSM modem for sending a SMS Text message to you when the zone is breached. Just register the pay-as-you-go SIM card with some credit and insert into the S-PIR, plug in the mains transformer and you are ready to configure. Then by SMS change the security passcode and add your mobile number – and it’s ready.

Hands-on: Big Buck Hunter Pro for iPhone

Not so very long I posted up that ‘Big Buck Hunter Pro’ for iPhone had got a release – well now I’ve got to play it! There’s not a great deal to explain as regards the central concept – you are deer hunting, and you’ve got take down as many of the little suckers as possible – interspersed with that are some fairground-like games, including flipping frogs, and whacking moles. I’ve got to say though, even at this point, it’s all done with a great deal of style and panache – even down to the authentic voiceover from a ‘hunter’ The scenery is actually done really well in this game – they’ve used the graphical capabilities of the iPhone to generate some sweet-looking backgrounds

Modern Warfare 2 hacked to reveal dev console, tweaks, etc

Now, it’s not this blog’s intention to post every little bit of gaming news (or is it?), but this is a more signal event than all the PR out there. Modern Warfare 2 for the PC, which infamously lacks dedicated servers, a console, the ability to kick players, and other things integral to a good PC game. Infinity Ward, maddeningly apathetic to the needs and requests of their users, has said that no changes to the stated areas are forthcoming.

It’s Google’s world and handset makers just live in it

When the Motorola Droid launched this month everyone was amazed that a company so down on its luck was able to put together a well-designed phone running a powerful, “brand new” OS. The whole package – hardware, software, and marketing – seemed flawless. In fact, phones running Android 1.5 now look hopelessly outdated and with 2.0’s gesture, CDMA, and search support you’d wonder why handset manufacturers like HTC, LG, Kyocera, and Samsung are using 1.5 at all.

Samsung not dropping Symbian after all

Samsung will not drop the Symbian support , despite the rumor that has started spreading across the Interwebs few days ago. The Korean company commented on the story, which BTW originates from Taiwanese site DigiTimes , saying the article “is not in line with Samsung’s smartphone strategy.” They went on to add: Samsung is an initial member of Symbian Foundation and continues to cooperate with Symbian Foundation. At the same time, Samsung supports various existing open operating systems including Symbian, Linux, Android, and Windows Mobile.

Livestream extends its video streaming service to the iPhone/iPod Touch

Livestream is extending its video streaming platform to include the iPhone and iPod Touch users. What this means is that using Livestreem Procaster, you can stream video from a webcam, video camera or even broadcast PC/Mac’s desktop to all the interested iPhone/iTouch users over 3G or WiFi. The streaming on the iPhone/iPod Touch works over Safari as Livestream relies on the H.264 HTTP live streaming functionality included in iPhone’s native QuickTime player, removing the need for any application install requirements.

SBOrganizer lets jailbroken iPhone users organize apps and homescreens from the device itself

Here’s something for jailbroken iPhone owners who have tons of apps installed on their beloved device. The application is called SBorganizer and it provides you with a better way to organize iPhone apps across home screens right from the phone itself. You can re-order whole pages, app icons within pages, and move app icons between home screens in more clever ways than the existing “wiggly icons” routine

Knocking Live Pic Sharing iPhone app simplifies photo sharing over the Internet

The company called Pointy Heads Software has released a somewhat novel iPhone app called Knocking Live Pic Sharing, which they say represents “a new form of communication redefining the way mobile users share moments.” Instead of using Bluetooth or WiFi for file (photo) transfer, they went the other way using Internet to enable users to share their stuff (photos as I said). Pointy Heads goes on suggesting their app eliminates the “upload, send, download” process, establishing live device-to-device connection and no proximity of the two devices is required

Sony Music Entertainment to mobilize its artists’ websites; MJ’s site first on the list

I’m not sure why it took so long for Sony’s music publishing arm to fully “go mobile,” but whatever the reasoning is, it’s good to see them finally taking this route. The company has partnered with Azuki Systems to optimize the web destinations of its artists for viewing on mobile phones. Not surprisingly, Michael Jackson’s official website is the first site to launch under the initiative.

A DVD that lasts 1000 years (but is it scratch resistant?)

New kid on the block Cranberry claims that their new DVD will last 1,000 years. Of course no one will be around to dispute that claim, and by then we’ll be using some kind of organic memory light data cell, but hey! Who knows, maybe future generations will want to see those vacation photos you took of Grandma Rhoda and Aunt Suzy. Seriously though, I can see this as being a good thing at the corporate level
