Prepaid phone ban stirs anger in Indian Kashmir

We already talked about India’s ban on prepaid mobile phones in Kashmir , which authorities put in force in belief rebels use fake documents to obtain the phone cards to evade detection and detonate bombs. Well, the move is far from popular and has led to angry protests, putting as many as 20,000 jobs at risk and jeopardizing peace efforts in the disputed territory between the Indian government and Muslim separatists.

Review: ContourHD wearable 1080p camcorder

The Short Version: The ContourHD 1080p is a capable, semi-rugged, conveniently-shaped HD camcorder that’s great for all kinds of sporting and active events where a full-size camera isn’t practical. The 1080p video has admirable still image quality, but skew and compression mean it’s more of an enthusiast tool than a professional one. But for $330, it’s a great little tool for documenting your rides, falls, and so on, and putting the results up on the internet

Brief: Nokia N900 in da house!

I wrote a piece yesterday about first impressions the N900 , which really seemed to upset some people – chief amongst the objections were the fact that not everyone believed I have the N900 – well it’s picture-time, check it out: Other objections included black-and-white statements that resistive screens don’t support multi-touch – with a couple of minutes Googling, I think you’ll find that multi-touch on a resistive screen is entirely possible – it just happens not to be on the N900 – shame … Others were of the opinion that I must be an Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) Fanboi – something I strenuously deny. Oh, BTW, the pictures above were taken using an iPhone 3GS Ben Related News from IntoMobile: ABI Research: Capacitive touchscreens not the wave of the future for most mobile phones Brief: Confirmed: Maemo 6 to bring support for multi touch and capacitive screens Apple iPhone – Disappointing LCD Screen? How to Use Your iPhone as a USB Drive

Sure there are many applications in the App Store that allow you to use your iPhone as a mass storage device, but all of them require an internet connection to allow the data transfer to happen over wifi. To this date, there is no application approved by Apple that lets you use your iPhone as a USB flash drive , and that’s a shame because I’d like to be able to access my iPhone’s drive without having to be connected to the internet. Developer Dmytro came up with an interesting solution to this problem by creating the USB Drive application: USB Drive let you create one or more virtual disks for use as USB Mass Storage volume, thus you can allocate some of your iPhone space to carry desktop files with you.

NewTek’s new mobile HD video production vehicle. As opposed to those unmobile HD video production vehicles.

Is CrunchGear gradually turning into a car blog? We test drove a Chevy Volt concept , saw the Subaru snowtank , and tested the Telsa Roadster Sport . I sense a disturbing trend… But at least this next car we looked at is 100% geek through and through

AT&T apparently isn’t going to let the likes of Verizon Wireless and bitter AT&T ( NYSE: T ) subscribers get them down about their 3G network performance. Big Blue has announced that it’s beefing up 3G services in the San Francisco Bay Area – they’ve upgraded more than 800 cellular base stations and is in the process of migrating 3G services from the 1900Mhz spectrum to the more powerful 850Mhz band in an effort to improve 3G performance. The Five-minute fiddle: Nokia N900

So I just received an N900 in the post today, and one of the things I do like to do with new hardware, is to give it the ‘five-minute fiddle’. For those of you that are not familiar, the aim of the five-minute fiddle is to spend a very short period getting first impressions of a given handset/service, and then write things up with a summary ‘gut feeling’ about it. Unpacking My N900 is a full retail model, and so I got a good feeling for the real end-user experience when opening up the packaging of this little bad boy
