Droid 2 Teardown Reveals Beefed-Up Processor, Few Other Changes

The Motorola Droid 2 looks a lot like the original Droid, and a teardown reveals that the similarities go more than skin-deep. In fact, the internal layout and most of the Droid 2’s components are nearly identical to those of the original Droid, gadget repair site iFixit found . The most significant upgrade is to the processor, which is probably a Texas Instruments OMAP 3630, iFixit says

UK’s ITV Not Pleased With Apple iTV Rumors, Says It Will Defend Its IP

As soon as the rumor broke that Apple would be renaming its struggling Apple TV to iTV, to better fit with the company’s i[Device] naming system, I thought to myself, “Isn’t ITV the name of a television network in England that always misses key goals in soccer games?” Yes, yes it is. In fact, the network isn’t too keen on Apple using the name iTV, and has promised to “vigorously defend” its IP. In an interview with Pocket-link, Mike Large, ITV’s acting group director of Communications, said that it has a “very strong brand, and a highly valued IP.” As such, any move on Apple’s part to re-name the Apple TV could expect to meet a legal challenge

Hey Apple, Lighten Up on Camera+ [Rant]

Sony Ericsson W995a Cell Phone Review–Better Than Expected

We’ve got another Sony Ericsson to talk about, and they’ve brought us a lot of interesting models over the last few months.  Will they be able to do anything interesting with the Sony Ericsson W995a?  Let’s have a look! The Sony Ericsson W995a is a slider style cell phone with conference call capability, speakerphone, Wi-Fi, a composer system to make your own music, stereo speakers, direct printing (yes!  direct printing! You can actually print stuff off your cell phone by hooking it into a printer!), a hundred and eighteen gigs of memory (which is comparable to some older desktop computers), mobile web, mobile email, video calling services, Java application capability, a variety of downloadable content like games, ring tones and audio and video files, an eight megapixel camera with 16x digital zoom, face detection and automatic focus, alarm clock, calendar, basic calculator, MP3 player, a 3.5 mm headset jack, and a battery capable of yielding nine hours of talk time on one charge. There’s a lot of good things to say about the Sony Ericsson W995a–there are plenty of features here, the battery life is unbelievably long…in fact, about the only bad thing about it is that the controls were a little tricky to start with.  I had a rough time finding my way around, but it didn’t take long to get used to it.  And chances are you won’t have too much trouble with it either. The Sony Ericsson W995a is great phone with lots of options, and though the controls are a little balky to begin with, you won’t have trouble for long.  This may not be an iPhone killer, but it’s worth your time to check out.

Kegmate from Yelp uses iPad

I suppose that the reason why I posted this is because I know there are people out there who like hearing the word “beer”. These guys at Yelp created the iPad Kegbot, a device that has an iPad to keep track of beer consumed. It also has an RFID reader so it can know who is drinking, and how much they have drank.

San Francisco Might Allow Public to Block Ugly Cell Towers

The City of San Francisco is considering a new ordinance that would allow residents and business owners to object to the placement or installation of new cell towers based solely on their aesthetics. Federal laws state that the public can’t block new towers if standard safety conditions are met, but the new law proposed in San Francisco would permit the public to block new cell tower antennas from being built on public land. Complaints filed by the public over such matters would initiate a public hearing to discuss the antenna, its appearance and placement
