Digital China Picking up BlackBerry

China Mobile ( NYSE: CHL ) has been offering limited BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ) devices and service for about two years so far, before which consumers had to buy both from Hong Kong and roam, but selection is about to get a bit better as RIM has struck a deal with distributor Digital China . While it doesn’t look like they manage much the retail front-end themselves (although they do supply stores in 19 cities across China), Digital China’s work in IT infrastructure is likely a big part of RIM’s work with them, even if it’s only in so far as doing BlackBerry Enterprise Server installations, or hosted BES

BlackBerry 9100 Striker Parts, Coming Soon Appears at Wholesalers

After a healthy batch of both video and picture leaks of the next generation BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ) Pearl 9100, code-named Striker, we’ve got the first signs of a commercial presence. Given OEM parts seller SW-Box has 9100 keypads in stock , and unlocked handset vendor Pure Mobile has it up in their shop as coming soon , it won’t be long before we start seeing proper carrier inventories populating with 9100 SKUs. A release before the holidays might seem like wishful thinking, but Popular Electronics is listing the 9100 as available as of December 15 .

Ultrabrief: Nokia sues 11 companies that produce LCD screens, says they fixed their prices

In case you haven’t heard the news from all the other technology blogs out there, Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) is suing AU Optronics, Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Samsung, Sharp, LG, Tatung, Seiko Epson, Samsung SDI, Hitachi, Toshiba ( OTCPK: TOSBF ) and Philips, for allegedly fixing the prices of LCD screens between January 1, 1996 to December 11, 2006. That’s 10 years of over paying. Why it took them so long to sue is a more interesting question than what kind of money Nokia is looking to earn from this legal battle.

Rogers Goes from “Most Reliable” to Plain Old “Reliable”

A few weeks ago, telus ( NYSE: TU ) launched a suit against Rogers ( NYSE: RCI ) arguing that Rogers had no claim to being “Canada’s most reliable network” since telus now has an HSPA network to put them on par with the GSM incumbent. Today, Rogers’ front page has had some minor wording changes, namely that they aren’t necessarily the most reliable, but they’re still reliable… In that they have a network that does what it’s supposed to most of the time, I guess. The new tagline just doesn’t have that same “king of the hill” ring to it, does it?

iPhone App: AT&T’s “Mark the Spot” turns iPhone owners into wireless network testers

A long, long time ago I was once told that if people in Japan ever experienced a dead zone, they would simply call their mobile operator, tell them what happened and where, and soon their problem would be fixed and an apology would be issued. Will AT&T do the same with their “Mark the Spot” iPhone application [ iTunes link ] remains to be seen, but it’s an awesome attempt to fix their problems, even if it’s just a publicity stunt. Here is how “Mark the Spot” works: You turn the application on after you’ve experienced terrible service from AT&T, select the problem you’ve experienced, allow the GPS to get a fix of where the problem is, and then hit submit.

Rescue Princess Daphne All Over Again in Dragon’s Lair for the iPhone

EA Mobile announced today they have brought the timeless gaming classic, Dragon’s Lair , to the iPhone / iPod Touch.  Dragon’s Lair for the iPhone / iPod Touch stays true to the arcade classic in Arcade Mode, but it also offers the laserdisc version in Home Mode.  Dragon’s Lair is a brutally difficult game, which is why EA also some “boosts” to the game, such as infinite lives or being able to highlight portions of the screen that players will need to interact with. If you grew up visiting the local arcades in the 80s, then you’re all too familiar with Dragon’s Lair.  If you were the type to be doing actual outdoor activities that involved sunlight, green grass, and friends, then allow me to fill you in.  Dragon’s Lair has you playing as Dirk the Daring, who is on a quest to save Princess Daphne from the evil dragon Singe.  The game plays like an interactive cartoon where certain scenes would play and it’s up to the player to figure out how best to interact in order to progress through the levels. Dell planning a communications unit that would make mobile devices, handsets included

I guess we all expected to see this happening now that the Dell Mini 3i has been officially announced. As a matter of fact, I bet the working group behind the Android-powered smartphone is already working as a semi-separate part of the company and forming an “official division” is the next logical step forward. According to a Dell spokesperson — and brought to us by the Wall Street Journal — the PC maker is planning to create a communications unit that would focus on mobile devices, handsets included.

Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition: The cheapest device with GPS to ever hit the market [110 EUR]

Nokia ( NYSE: NOK )’s massive scale allows them to drive down their costs drastically. While many, practically all of you, will never buy the 2710 Navigation Edition, there are people in emerging economies who are going to enjoy the safety of having a map in their pocket at all times and knowing where on that map they’re currently standing. I’ll never forget when the Nokia N97 came out; GPS in a mobile phone was unheard of at the time, and this was only 2 years ago

Yahoo’s mobile division set for exponential growth

Yahoo expects its mobile division to grow “exponentially,” even as the overall market is only starting to emerge from recession. In that sense, the company is focused on boosting the number of mobile users as a way to attract more advertisers, Hilary Schneider, Yahoo North America’s executive VP said at the Reuters Global Media Summit in New York. She went on to add: “If you just look at the growth rates on mobile, they’re incredible, they’re extraordinary, but you have to just remember that they’re starting with a small base.

Apple’s LaLa acquisition points to streaming iTunes music

Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) has been raking in cash with its iTunes music store over the past several years, in the process forcing the music industry and consumers to get comfortable with paying $1 per downloaded song. These days, you’ll find iPod and iPhone users toting around dozens of gigabytes worth of downloaded music with them wherever they go. Soon though, Apple might just side-step the download process and stream your music library directly to your iPhone.

T minus 2 days until Samsung reveals Bada; EA and Twitter to be at the launch event

I don’t know about you, but I’m actually quite curious to see what Samsung has up their sleeves with their home grown Bada operating system . You may not know this, but Samsung is the second largest handset maker in the world. They’re not a little fish in the sea, and depending on which analyst you ask, the South Korean company whose name translates to “three stars” and who started out as nothing more than a trading post, may very well become the next Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) in terms of unit sales.

Skyhook Wireless survey: There’s still no money in Android apps

Unlike the iPhone apps, Android apps are not pure gold, as not that many people actually buys them. According to the recent Skyhook Wireless’ survey, Android developers are frustrated with multiple issues, including: 82% of those surveyed indicated that the design of the Android Market makes it difficult for apps to be noticed; 57% are not satisfied with the profits to date; 43% report that they would sell more apps if Android used a carrier billing or another simpler billing system (other than Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ) Checkout); Only 10% of Android developers are currently serving ads. Finally, as we see Android evolving with the day, developers don’t like the idea of having multiple versions of the OS available for the users – 46% were certain this would make development more difficult.
