The Signal 44: CTIA Wrapup and EarPollution Timbre Earbud Giveaway

Yeah, yeah, we know, we’re a little late. Sorry for the delay, y’all – between recovering from CTIA, and some technical difficulties, the podcast fell to the wayside for a few weeks, but we’re back on track now. San Diego had a few treats in store for us, like the Samsung Moment and the Behold II, but there was a lot happening with T-Mobile ( NYSE: DT ) both before and after CTIA: the details of Project Dark came to light, so Will and I hashed out what hardware financing means for American wireless (mostly good things)

Verizon BlackBerry Storm2 Dropping October 28?

Verizon has been awfully quiet throughout the Storm2 announcement despite their big brother abroad, Vodafone ( NYSE: VOD ), has been pretty open and even squeaked out an October 26 shipping date ; luckily, Verizon ( NYSE: VZ ) won’t be far behind as their internal blog has announced an October 28th. launch date in the U.S. Dummy units have already been finding their way to Best Buy stores , so it seems like a safe bet.

People in Kenya can now buy flights and bus tickets with their mobile phone; I wish I was joking

While Japan has been using NFC technology to enable mobile payments for years now, the rest of the world has been lagging in terms of mobile payments. Europe, the continent that was the first to launch GSM technology on a massive scale, still hasn’t figured out mobile payments. Premium SMS doesn’t count since it is mostly used to buy annoying ringtones and wallpapers from even more annoying commercials that play around midnight on weekdays

Refuseniks: People who prefer not to have a mobile phone; they’re out there!

A few years ago I would have been stunned at this article in The New York Times about people who choose not to have a mobile phone, but lately I find myself sharing some of their feelings and at times even do the same things they do; turning my mobile phone off for a day, sometimes even an entire weekend. “Refuseniks”, a phrase I was unfamiliar with until today, go without a mobile phone for a variety of reasons. Gregory Han, 34 year old online blogger, says “It’s a luxury not to be reached when I’m out and about”, a statement I agree with wholeheartedly

Video: Sony Ericsson Jalou by Dolce&Gabbana commercial

Remember the arguably stylish Sony Ericsson Jalou ? One of the device versions was co-signed by Dolce&Gabbana and that specific device got a new commercial. Here’s what’s it all about right from the horse’s mouth (that’s Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana): The campaign theme plays with the concept of jealousy and desire for a must have object, the protagonists are willing to do whatever is necessary to get it before everyone else, the link with the Dolce&Gabbana brand is the strong femininity, the exclusivity and luxury of the women that wear the Dolce&Gabbana clothing, use the Jalou by Dolce&Gabbana phone and embrace our world in general.

Brief: You’re going to have to wait until November for the Nokia N900

With October coming to an end in a little over a week, and mobile phone geeks around the world eagerly await the Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) N900 to start shipping, it seems that the device isn’t going to be “ in select markets … October 2009 ” like the August press release said. Peter Schneider, Head of Maemo Marketing @ Nokia, posted a message to the official Maemo forum with the latest information regarding availability: The Nokia N900 is a great example of what we and the open source community have been able to achieve with Maemo software

Juniper Research: Over half a billion people to use mobile money transfer services by 2014

Juniper Research’s latest report titled “Mobile Money Transfer & Remittances: Markets, Forecasts & Strategies 2009-2014″ argues that the consumer demand for mobile money transfer services will see users exceed 500 million globally by 2014, most of which will come from the developing countries. The reason is simple – for many people living in such markets, a mobile phone will be their first touch with the banking system. However, Juniper also points out that many of the mobile money services being announced will face political, regulatory or commercial challenges along the way

Ofcom grants Freedom4 licence variation for mobility

Freedom4 (which is a joint investment between Daisy Group plc and Intel Capital) has been granted a licence variation by Ofcom (in the UK) that enables it to offer mobile wireless broadband services to its customers using its nationwide 3.6GHz spectrum. Apparently, Freedom4 has already achieved the world’s first seamless mobile WiMAX handover between base stations operating at two frequencies (2.5GHz and 3.6GHz) and “architected a high capacity core network, capable of delivering wholesale services”.

What is the ‘laggiest’ handset you have used?

Just the other day, I was in the local O2 ( NYSE: TEF ) shop, playing with the Palm ( NSDQ: PALM ) Pre – having heard so much about it, but no opportunity to get hands-on, I was keen to see what the device could do. Initially, I was really pleased to see an excellent implementation of both the capacitance screen sensitivity, but also of the UI – it really does look that nice, and in my mind at least, is a competitor for the iPhone UI for sure.

The Five-minute fiddle: Amazon Kindle (International version)

I don’t know how many of these bad boys have arrived in the UK yet, but the person who’s kindle I played with yesterday claimed theirs was one of the first! Whether that’s true or not, I’m not sure – but one thing is clear – Kindle, with support for Euro 3G, is definitely here! To rewind a little: the Kindle is Amazon’s play in the e-book reader space – and Amazon have one huge advantage over other e-book reader manufacturers … can you guess what it is?! Yep, the (arguably) critical area of content! To say that Amazon know a bit about selling books is possibly the understatement of the year! So Amazon have got some hardware in to the marketplace, which has been established for some time – when I say marketplace of course, what I actually mean is the US domestic marketplace (officially) – but in the last few days, the informally-titled ‘Kindle 2’has appeared, rocking 3G and EDGE support for European mobile networks. What makes this more interesting from my perspective is that the device can supposedly roam on any major network in most countries,  and you don’t pay the data fees for doing your book downloads. Schweet! Because the Kindle display uses E Ink®, you should theoretically get huge battery life, since the power needed to maintain screen display of a given page is close to zero

Rogers and RIM Kick Off CampusChase in Ottawa

I took the morning to check out a contest RIM and Rogers ( NYSE: RCI ) were holding at the University of Ottawa called CampusChase , where teams of two run around town like headless chickens on a scavenger hunt for big prizes. Rogers wasn’t quite ready to show off the Bold 9700 just yet (all of the promos were for the Curve 8520), but it was still a ton of fun hanging out with the BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ) mascots for awhile. Here are a few pictures of the booths, contestants, and the warm-up just prior to the race

Nokia: SUE you, Apple. That’s our wireless tech you’re infringing on.

Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) isn’t just the largest mobile phone maker in the world (although, they’re bleeding market share like a hemophiliac heavyweight boxer), they also hold a lot of technology patents that make the wireless world go ’round . And, Nokia doesn’t like it when other companies use their intellectual property without paying their dues. Today, Nokia has announced that it is suing Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) for infringing on 10 of those patents with the iPhone

T-Mobile USA offers eco-friendly fuel cell charger

T-Mobile ( NYSE: DT ) has a neat new accessory showcased on its website . It’s called the 24/7 Xtreme Portable Power Solution, and it’s touted to bring the “instant, eco-friendly power for your phone.” The trick is in the fuel cells, using which the charger works similar to a chemical ice pack, requiring user to squeeze it and shake it. The Medis-made Xtreme then uses electrochemical processes to create electricity and do its recharge magic.
