Rumor: Nokia C7 ships with NFC capabilities built in, will be turned on later via software update

There’s an unsubstantiated rumor floating around that the Nokia C7, Finland’s second Symbian^3 device to start shipping , the first being the N8, has NFC capabilities built in , but due to being rushed to market the software written to support said internal hardware wasn’t included. In the future however Nokia will issue a software upgrade that will make the C7 one of the first mass market devices with near field communication built in. Now if this is true, and it may just be a PR snafu, then I’ve got to wonder what the hell Nokia was thinking

1 out of 3 AT&T iPhone customers will switch to Verizon

The iPhone has been an AT&T exclusive in the US for time immemorial (which, in the mobile world, translates into a little over three years), but that exclusivity will soon come to an end, with Verizon rumored to be launching an iPhone of their own in the near future. Big Red, with their self-proclaimed superior wireless network, might be able to put some real hurt on AT&T if/when the Verizon iPhone becomes a reality

The Mobile Roundup – The ‘Big Things’ edition

There was a bunch of news this week that could have long-reaching consequences and no story was bigger than the Google and Verizon putting forth a joint policy statement regarding net neutrality. Verizon to charge an extra $10 to $15 for 4G LTE data plans?

It looks like Verizon will be pulling a Sprint and will charge customers an extra $10 to $15 for the privilege of using the carrier’s 4G LTE data service -the charge will be added on top of the existing data plan for compatible devices. We can’t we say we’re surprised, but it’s going to be interesting how customer react to drastically highers fees to access the faster 4G LTE data network. Verizon is expected to start bringing the mobile broadband data speed of its nascent 4G network to laptops (via USB data cards), and then work their way to LTE-enabled smartphones, which should become available sometime in the first half of 2011, possibly May .

New BlackBerry Torch 9800 Ad Shows How Business Meets Pleasure

We’ve seen one AT&T ad for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 that was high on gloss, but they’ve just released another TV spot that’s a little more fun. Appropriately enough, they’re pitching the device as a “business meets pleasure” kind of smartphone, which would be a fair enough assessment if there was a catalog of decent games in App World (which there isn’t). Besides that, I’m more of a fan of Verizon’s Droid ads , but AT&T’s is still a fun little commercial worth a gander.

Juniper Research: Mobile app store downloads to reach 25 billion by 2015

As we have a growing number of app stores, Juniper Research is forecasting that the annual number of consumer-oriented handset downloads will rise from less than 2.6 billion in 2009 to more than 25 billion in 2015. The research company argues that players across the mobile value chain are seeking to emulate Apple’s AppStore success. Hence we have a rising number of carriers unveiling their solutions – China Unicom has “Mobile Market,” India’s Bharti “Airtel App Central” and Vodafone “Apps & Games Shop.” At the same time there are manufacturer and platform specific storefronts, as well as independents such as GetJar and Handango

Please stop encouraging tricky apps like Handy Light

By now, you should be aware that Apple pulled the Handy Light app this morning because the flashlight app could be secretly turned into a tethering program with a secret code. I would like all the people encouraging other developers to include secret functionality in apps to kindly shut up. Tricking the gatekeepers leads us down a bad path that hurts all parts of the mobile app ecosystem
