Symbian unveils new web app development tools

Symbian released its web application development tools, making application development on the platform “as easy as creating a webpage.” In other words, any web developer with a knowledge of HTML, CSS and some JavaScript can create mobile apps that run on Symbian smartphones, including the newly unveiled Nokia N8 . The good thing about these tools is that they allow accessing even some of the phone’s deep device capabilities — including contacts, camera, sensors, location, etc. — with JavaScript (there are special APIs for accessing phone-specific features)

iPhone, BlackBerry Won’t Last Another Five Years – Kaspersky

Eugene Kaspersky, CEO of a popular antivirus company , said at a Infosec that closed operating systems, like iPhone, BlackBerry ( NSDQ: RIMM ), and Windows Phone, won’t last in the long run because they don’t embrace open-source, like Android and Symbian do. That’s an awfully heavy-handed statement, considering the ample success of iPhone and BlackBerry these days, though Android certainly provides a case for successful open-source mobile operating systems. At the same conference, Kaspersky has has reiterated their coverage of mobile phone viruses which, though currently nonexistant, could become a worry as smartphones gain marketshare and operating systems become bigger and introduce more security gaps.

Samsung may release a Symbian phone later this year

All you Symbian fans should be happy to hear that Samsung is reportedly planning to make a handset with that operating system by the end of the year. There have been some rumblings that the world’s second-biggest handset maker would ditch Symbian because it already supports Android, bada and Windows Phone 7 but that doesn’t seem to hold any merit. What type of phone can we expect?

Nokia E72 White Edition shows up on Nokia’s Malaysian website

Nokia ( NYSE: NOK ) is about to launch a new version of its popular E72 smartphone. A new version actually means new color – white. At the moment, the E72 is available in four color options (black, grey, brown and purple) and with the addition of white, I’m betting the Finnish company will move even more units — Nokia E71, which is the predecessor of the E72, is still selling like crazy in white.
