New Apple ad “Broken Promises” has PC in flip-up shades; what’s not to like?

Oh, PC. Your hijinx extend back so far that in those days, you had long hair! Apple wins again! While this newest Apple ad (about which I am being paid millions to post) is entertaining in a sort of superficial, nudge-nudge amirite kind of way, I don’t think it’s really as compelling as most of the other ads, even as lacking in facts as those were. I guess these ads are so simple to make that they can afford to just run with every idea, no matter how vague or half-baked

Volkswagen ‘launches’ the 2010 GTI on the iPhone with Real Racing GTI game

To call us a “car blog” would sorta be stretching the truth. Occasionally one of the guys—aka Matt Burns— will do a car story , yeah, but that’s primarily because he thinks he’s James May. I have no such illusions of grandeur; I’m just sitting at a desk typing things, and writing student loan checks… Before this gets any further off track, the news: Volkswagen has teamed up with the guys behind Real Racing, Firemint,

Citizen CrunchDeals: 10-foot HDMI cable for 74 cents plus $2.95 shipping

CrunchGear reader Steve Jabs seems like a reasonable and trustworthy guy. Patient, too, as he’s been reading the site for quite some time now and clearly hasn’t removed our feed from his RSS reader in a fit of rage over one of the many half-assedly researched and grammatically baffling posts that have graced these virtual pages for so many years. Steve alerts us to a ten-foot HDMI cable deal on Amazon: 74 cents, plus $2.95 for shipping

Open ye 27-inch iMacs while ye may

iFixit has torn up the new iMac to reveal the delicate inner workings of both the machine and its attendant Magic Mouse. Obviously the biggest issue here is removing the massive piece of glass on the front, a process that requires a spunger, suction cups, and a sense that life is futile and electronics should be destroyed on camera for the edification of an audience. The Magic Mouse teardown shows us that the mouse is covered in one big touchscreen – not huge news – but it also seems that the case is translucent

Rumor: Best Buy to have the Motorola Droid on October 24 for $599 sans contract

It should be known by now that the Motorola Droid is launching on October 28 , but according to these screenshots of Best Buy’s system, the retailer might have the phone available early on October 24. Now, the 24 is this coming Saturday, which is a usual inventory restocking day so just because the stores have them somewhere doesn’t mean they will be available for purchase.

The latest device to join the explosively-growing e-book reader crowd is the $260 Barnes & Noble “Nook.” Nook debuted Tuesday and will be available at the end of November, Barnes & Noble says. Review: Apple MacBook

For weeks – months even – analysts have been telling Apple to make a netbook for the masses, a $299 junker designed for those who surf the web on the couch, their Cheeto-stained hands scrabbling for the TiVo remote while they incessantly refresh Reddit and hope against hope that their Craigslist Missed Connection emails them back. The Air, they said, was too expensive, designed for the frou-frou quiche-eaters of Silicon (V)alley while the MacBook Pros were too overpowered for the likes of Flyover Sally and her sad-eyed brood of younglings. They needed to sell something to the masses, something solid, American, and corn-fed

Review: iFrogz Timbre earbuds w/mic and Luxe case for iPod touch

Short Version: What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate iFrogz’s Timbre headphones w/mic and their iPod touch 2G & 3G Luxe case. In a nutshell, the Timbre headphones (which work with both the iPhone and iPod touch) provide decent audio playback, a reasonably comfortable fit (thanks to the three different ear bud choices), and the convenience of a built-in microphone for voice memos, Skype, etc albeit for the slightly higher than desirable price of $49.99.

Sony prepping to launch affordable LCD TV line early next year?

Sony isn’t typically known for aggressive pricing, but the company will apparently be rolling out a value-priced line of 32- and 40-inch LCD TVs early next year. According to DigiTimes : “The B series, including 32- and 40-inch models, will be priced lower than its current S series entry-level models in order to help the vendor regain its position in the global LCD TV market, the sources noted, adding that the price of a 32-inch B series Sony LCD TV is estimated at about NT$15,000 (US$462.96) or even lower.” That “or even lower” part is important to note. I’d venture a guess that U.S

Verizon Attacks the iPhone, Hints at Upcoming Droid

In one of the boldest attacks on Apple’s iPhone so far, Verizon unveiled a TV commercial and website over the weekend that touted Droid, a new smartphone from Motorola, as a device that does everything the iPhone doesn’t. Verizon’s “iDon’t” TV commercial and website (warning: Flash-centric site) displays a series of statements aimed directly at the iPhone, such as ‘iDon’t have a real keyboard, iDon’t customize, iDon’t allow open development,” but without naming the iPhone directly. (You can watch the Droid ad on YouTube , or scroll down to see the video here.) The ad took industry watchers and analysts by surprise.

What “on-demand” media really means and why your cable company should be scared

I’ve been angling to get rid of my TiVo and cable for some time now and I believe I’ve finally figured out a solution that works best for me. It involves a lots scripting, Sabnzbd , and HandbrakeCLI and I’ll tell you what I ultimately did next week once it’s stable but it seems to be working as well as can be expected for these sorts of hacks.

Interview: We talk to The Rentals’ Matt Sharp about Songs About Time (Hint: Read if you like fantastic photographs and/or quality music)

I remember these streets, I remember these faces, no one here ever ages/ angels from machines, crowding the streets/ there must be some kind of factory where the angels are made to just be replaced/ I’ve written enough, enough for today Generally speaking I’m a hip-hop guy, but even I can get behind something like “there must be some kind of factory where the angels are made to just be replaced.” It’s a line from a verse of the song “Song of Remembering” by The Rentals . Why am I brining up this seemingly random song, and one that doesn’t appear to have anything to do with “ our core mission ” of technology writing? Because it does have something to do with technology, friends.

Acer AspireRevo nettop gets Windows 7, dual-core CPU, more memory

You may or may not recall that a couple weeks ago, Acer’s ION-powered AspireRevo nettop showed up on Newegg.com for the low, low price of $199. While the machine featured some relatively-impressive specs (Atom N230 CPU, NVIDIA ION, XP Home, etc.), there’s now a new entrant to the AspireRevo line that bumps the CPU up to dual-core status, doubles the RAM, and adds Windows 7 Home Premium as well as a wireless connection.

In-App Sales and iTablet: The Killer Combo to Save Publishing?

Apple on Thursday made a subtle-yet-major revision to its App Store policy, enabling extra content to be sold through free iPhone apps. It’s a move that immediately impacts the publishing industry, and it could pay even bigger dividends if the Cupertino, California, company indeed delivers its highly anticipated touchscreen tablet. While the most obvious beneficiaries would be app developers, a market segment that can also benefit from the new in-app commerce model are people and companies that create content and need to set up shop in a way that doesn’t, in effect, charge someone for just walking in — like media publishers.

French health agency: Try to limit your exposure to mobile phones if only because we don’t have enough data to say otherwise

A group of researchers in France just recommended that we all limit our exposure to wireless devices, including mobile phones, Wi-Fi, and microwaves, because we really don’t understand how prolonged exposure to them can affect us. That’s particularly true with mobile phones, since they’ve really only been around for, what, 10 years? (Obviously there were available for longer than that, but Joe Public didn’t buy his first phone till a little bit later.) You can’t categorically say, based on 10 years of sometimes spotty data, that “phones are bad!” or “phones are good!” We simply don’t know

Rumor: Intel Atom N450 (Pine Trail) to launch on January 3rd?

Fudzilla is reporting that Intel’s new Atom N450 chipset – codenamed Pine Trail ( see previous coverage here ) — will officially launch on January 3rd. Previous reports suggested that the chipset will be made available to manufacturers sometime this month, to which I speculated that we’d see Pine Trail-equipped netbooks around the holidays. If Fudzilla’s report is true, though — and the site makes no reference to any sources, so take the information with a grain of salt — then it appears these new netbooks would make an appearance just in time for CES.

Tom Swift and the Silver Space Balloon or A Father’s Lament

I’ve purposely avoided watching much more about the Balloon Boy, Falcon Heene, simply because the story is so ludicrous on its face. When you boil it down, you have an odd family who built what amounts to a weather balloon in their back yard and then believed – and convinced the rest of the world – that their son flew off in said balloon, over the green vales of Denver, and risked mortal harm. It was Baby Jessica in near-space, a Thursday afternoon knuckle-ball that reminded me of watching Sully land a plane in the Hudson just a few months ago So when I heard that the kid was hiding in the attic the whole time I felt a vague sense of disappointment, which I know is wrong

Tripod Mounted Laptop Stand For Photographers and Mobile Workers

The Laptop Deck from Tallyn’s is an oversized tripod head and flat panel onto which you can fix a laptop, or a really, really big camera. It has a ball-and socket head and is adjustable to fit computers of up to 17” in size, and at $85 is dirt cheap in comparison to most photographic kit. The idea is that photographers shooting tethered to their laptops will have somewhere safe to put the computer.
